It’s like a modern fairy tale, in which the princess wins the hearts of everyone, except that the “princess” in this story isn’t thin, fair-skinned and shy. Quite the opposite – she’s sturdy, tanned and outspoken.

这好像一个现代版的童话故事，故事里公主受到了所有人的喜爱，只不过这个公主不瘦不白也不害羞。恰恰相反，她是个皮肤黝黑、健硕坦率的女孩。

She is Wang Ju, a contestant on the ongoing reality music competition show Produce 101, which premiered on Tencent Video on April 21.

她就是现正热播的真人音乐竞赛类节目《创造101》中的选手王菊，该节目于4月21日在腾讯视频首播。

Wang, 26, had her moment of glory on May 29 when she ranked No 1 in an internet voting round, defeating her fellow contestants who could be considered more traditionally “attractive”.

26岁的王菊在5月29日迎来了自己的高光时刻，当天她在网络投票环节中位列第一，击败了其他在传统意义上更为“迷人”的选手。

“It’s time to embrace a new generation of girl groups who stop succumbing to the male gaze,” wrote Global Times reporter Ke Rensi. “Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and personalities.”

“是时候迎接不再迎合男性眼光的新一代女团了，”《环球时报》记者柯仁思(音译)写道。“美有各种各样的外貌、体型以及个性。”

But there’s more to Wang than just the way she looks.

而除了外貌之外，王菊身上还有更多的闪光点。

With her motto – “It’s better to change the wind than to wait for it” – Wang displays the qualities of being independent and ambitious, unwilling to give in to mainstream standards that girls should be obedient and quiet and play cute all the time. Instead, she makes it clear what she wants, and fights hard for her goals.

正如王菊的个人宣言“等风来不如追风去”所说的那样，她展现了自己的独立与雄心壮志，不愿让步于主流标准，如女孩应该温顺安静，时不时卖个萌等。王菊坦率地表明自己内心所想，并且为自己的目标努力奋斗。

These are, in fact, qualities that are increasingly becoming more common in females, even though they used to be considered unattractive in girls and women.

For example, in a letter of advice to a friend who had just had a baby daughter, Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie wrote, “Teach her that ‘gender roles’ are absolute nonsense. Do not ever tell her that she should do or not do something ‘because you are a girl’, because ‘you are a girl’ is never a reason for anything, ever.” And Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, also said: “A gender line helps to keep women not on a pedestal, but in a cage.”

It looks like by staying true to the way she is, Wang is already breaking free from that “cage”. Or, in her own words, she has successfully “changed the wind”.
