If you believe people who were organizing this referendum then they are saying the turnout hasbeen spectacular. Figures were well above 70% if this were they are saying. Whether or not, itactually means that as many people as they say turned out to vote I think they will find outfairly shortly within the next few days. The South Sudan rebel leader, Riek Machar, says he is still committed to the peace agreementsigned on Friday with the government, even though he says the government violated theceasefire. The Sudanese Information Minister has accused the rebels of violations of theagreement but said the government would not break it. Stephen Sackur who's been speakingto the rebel leader, says the situation seems confused.

The Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and East African leaders have formally signed an agreement forthe construction of a new railway which would link the Kenyan port city of Mombasa to thecapital Nairobi and on to landlocked Rwanda and South Sudan. W W reports from Nairobi.
The Chinese premier Li Keqiang told reporters the first phase of the railway from the Kenyanport of Mombasa to the capital Nairobi would cost the equivalent of $3.6bn. The master plan,he said, was to link all seven East African states by a rail, cutting freight costs significantly. Atthe moment, the original lines on X and the narrow gate lines were built in the 19th Century.
