[00:15.46]Some 10,000 regular and paramilitary troops have been wounded. [00:21.10]The high number of deaths and injuries [00:24.71]has resulted in improved care [00:27.78]at the army's top rehabilitation center in Rawalpindi. [00:32.45]Doctors at the rehabilitation center [00:35.99]help troops regain physical and mental skills damaged in war. [00:41.46]Aman Ullah lost both of his legs more than a year ago [00:46.95]while serving in the Khyber tribal area [00:50.07]on the border with Afghanistan. [00:52.50]The 23-year-old is one of the thousands of Pakistani soldiers [00:57.93]dealing with wounds from Pakistan's ongoing fight [01:02.05]against militant groups. [01:03.88]Most soldiers are wounded by improvised explosive devices, or IEDs. [01:10.90]"I was part of FC, you know, [01:15.38]the Frontier Corps [paramilitary force] convoy [01:17.34]when a roadside IED planted in a vehicle exploded. [01:20.87]I lost both my legs and received multiple injuries all around my body." [01:25.65]Arif Hussain is another patient recovering from injuries. [01:29.93]"We were engaged in an operation against extremists in the Mohmand agency [01:36.26]when one of their bullets hit me in the leg and I lost it." [01:39.65]The soldier is recovering from major medical operations [01:43.72]at Rawalpindi's Armed Forces Institute [01:47.25]for Rehabilitation Medicine, or AFIRM. [01:51.07]Aman Ullah and several other soldiers [01:54.80]are now hoping to compete in the next Paralympic Games. [01:58.93]This international competition is for athletes with disabilities. [02:04.17]Their inspiration is South African Oscar Pistorius. [02:08.72]He became the first double amputee Olympian in London last year -- [02:14.75]long before he faced charges of murder. [02:18.09]"When I saw the boy [Oscar Pistorius] from South Africa on television [02:22.81]racing with a horse and competing in the games, [02:25.83]I decided that, Inshallah [God willing], [02:28.35]next year I will also do that and compete with that young man." [02:32.03]Major-General Akhtar Waheed is the chief [02:36.20]of the army-operated rehabilitation center. [02:39.13]He is proud of the progress made in treating patients [02:43.26]who have suffered the loss of arms or legs. [02:46.37]"I had a few patients with three amputations and [02:50.20]one patient with four limb amputations. [02:52.02]So I think you have seen them in today's event and [02:56.90]they are not less than anybody." [02:59.78]The experience of treating thousands of patients over the years [03:05.12]has led to improved medical practices. [03:08.65]These improvements include more useful artificial limbs. [03:13.83]These replacement arms and legs are needed [03:17.95]after severe wounds lead to amputations. [03:21.69]Medical workers have also developed better practices [03:26.17]for helping wounded soldiers again stand on their feet. [03:30.55]With military efforts continuing in Pakistan's tribal areas, [03:35.90]there are plans to further expand the Rawalpindi rehabilitation center.
