[00:02.83]Topic 40 The Importance of Hope in One’s Life [00:08.02]There are many occasions in our lives [00:10.73]on which we may feel like giving up, [00:13.04]such as accidents, [00:14.12]losing the beloved one, [00:16.04]terminal illness, [00:17.49]failing in an important exam, [00:19.95]losing a job, and so on. [00:22.15]Those life changing events [00:24.66]can strike us without warning, [00:26.73]oftentimes several at a time, [00:29.01]seemingly layer upon layer, [00:31.35]weighing us down. [00:32.84]It seems that the seas of life [00:34.93]are so rough and stormy [00:36.96]that we are likely to get weary [00:38.79]trying to keep our little boat from sinking. [00:41.73]However, [00:42.66]if we have hopes, [00:44.26]we will not let those life changing events [00:47.18]get the best of us [00:48.25]and succumb to helplessness. [00:49.86]Firstly, [00:51.53]though hope is not an objective existence, [00:54.48]it can arouse optimistic feelings for the future. [00:58.22]As many psychologists’ research indicates, [01:01.50]reflecting on one’s failures is generally good, [01:05.15]but when it takes too much time, [01:07.29]it is dangerous, [01:08.49]for it soon becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy [01:11.41]that will quickly break every slice of confidence [01:14.97]that we have in ourselves. [01:16.57]That is how those who do not have hopes [01:19.77]deal with these ups and downs. [01:21.67]However, [01:23.10]if people have hopes and always look forward to the future, [01:26.58]they are able to envision a subjective picture of brightness [01:30.56]in their mind, [01:31.68]and take different measures to live a happy life. [01:34.47]Secondly, [01:35.79]having a hope helps people get rid of doubts [01:39.08]and fears of day-to-day life [01:41.31]and the challenges they must overcome [01:43.65]to stay on an even keel. [01:45.18]This can be best illustrated in clinics. [01:48.47]Medical practitioners are always sensitive to the effects of their words [01:53.52]so that their words might be acceptable to state the facts [01:56.53]in such a way that they do not take away all possibility of hope. [02:01.11]Even if the patient does die, [02:04.11]the time that he or she is given will be spent better [02:08.21]if the patient has been allowed some hope, [02:10.28]as opposed to spending the remaining lifetime [02:13.05]in a state of perpetual fear [02:14.79]that each day is supposed to be the last. [02:17.61]On all accounts, [02:19.51]indicative of having a hope is the optimism of our lives. [02:23.27]So long as we still have hopes in our heart, [02:26.67]we will always look forward to the future. [02:29.19]Hope can also help us remove doubts and fears [02:33.12]in our daily lives. [02:34.32]In any sense, [02:35.65]“Hope is a good thing, [02:37.73]maybe the best of things”, [02:38.99]as Andy Dufresne said in the Shawshank Redemption.
