[00:11]You sure are lucky... [00:15]It was a hot, muggy August afternoon, and I had every reason to feel sorry for myself. [00:24]A comedy of hassles began with the normal airport security gauntlet, followed by a random drug test, and a missed flight home due to a number of mechanical, weather and late inbound flight problems. [00:32]Now my flight home was full and late. [00:35]During the usual pandemonium at the gate, I noticed a 5-year-old boy standing by his mother and watching me. [00:43]He looked at me, then my bag, then back at me.　　 [00:47]Cautiously, he left his mother’s side and slowly began to walk toward me, glancing between my bag, his mother and me. [00:56]“Great,” I thought, “now I have to babysit a 5-year-old. My day is now complete.” [01:03]As he came closer, I was both relieved and alarmed that it wasn’t me he was after. [01:09]It was my hat!　　 [01:11]I started to tell him not to bother my things, but something made me stop and watch. [01:17]He stopped in front of my bag, looking at my hat, then up at me. [01:22]With wide eyes, he gently touched the bill of my hat, running his index finger slowly along the edge, carefully touching the emblem. [01:31]Again, he looked up at me, now smiling, but saying nothing. [01:36]I asked him if he would like to wear my captain hat. [01:39]He excitedly nodded his head, still smiling. [01:42]I placed my hat on his head, but it fell down around his ears. [01:46]He didn’t seem to mind and held it up in the proper position with both hands. [01:51]He ran to show his mother, then back to me still smiling from ear to ear. [01:56]With much reverence and ceremony, he slowly removed my hat with both hands and presented it to me as though it were the crown jewels. [02:06]I put my hat on and gave him an airplane card. [02:10]This, too, he held with both hands in awe. [02:13]After this exchange, he still hadn’t spoken, although I knew he was excited. [02:19]I also was happy that I had been briefly distracted from my self-pity fest. [02:24]Still holding the card carefully with both hands, he looked up at me and said, “Mister, you sure are lucky.” [02:32]“Yes,” I said, “I sure am.” [02:35]I contemplated the wisdom of a 5-year-old, as I got the last seat on that flight home.

What will matter

Ready or not, some day it will all come to an end.
There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten, will pass to someone else.
Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel① to irrelevance②. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed.
Your grudges③, resentments④, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So will your hopes, ambitions, plans and to do lists expire⑤ too.
The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away.
It won’t matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end.
It won’t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.
So what will matter? How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought but what you built, not what you got but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion, courage, or sacrifice that enriched, empowered⑥ or encouraged others to emulate⑦ your example.
What will matter is not your competence but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew, but how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone.
What will matter is not your memories but the memories that live in those who love you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered, by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident. It’s not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.

重要的是你会被铭记多久，是出于何种原因又是被何种人所铭记的。

过有意义的生活不是偶然而至的，它不由环境决定，只取决于你的选择。

选择过一种有意义的生活。

态度决定一切。对死亡的思考可以让生命变得更加纯净。
