A man in Brazil who went to hospital with back pain was found to have not two but three kidneys.

巴西一名男子因背痛被送往医院，结果发现他只有三个肾，而不是两个。

Doctors made the unusual discovery while investigating the 38-year old's herniated disk with a CT scan.

医生们在用CT扫描这位38岁男子的椎间盘突出症时，发现了这个不寻常的发现。

They found his kidneys worked normally, a report published in the New England Journal of Medicine said.

《新英格兰医学杂志》发表的一份报告说，他们发现他的肾脏工作正常。

"The scan incidentally showed the presence of three kidneys: a normal-appearing left kidney and two fused kidneys in the pelvis," the report said.

报告说:“扫描结果偶然显示了三个肾脏:一个正常的左肾和两个融合的肾盂。”

Doctors who treated the man at Hospital do Rim in Sao Paulo said the mutation is "not uncommon" and typically doesn't cause any symptoms.

They say it likely develops in the womb.
