     As can be seen from the chart above, the population aged 60 and over in China has increased markedly from 2000 to 2050. According to UN statistics, there were 120 million elderly people in 2000, accounting for about 10% of the total population, and the elderly population will shoot up to 450 million in 2050, accounting for approximately 32% of the total population.
     An increasing aging population will have enormous consequences for any society. First of all, it means that there is a decreasing workforce. Secondly, it means that this decreasing workforce has to financially support a growing number of elderly people. Thirdly, it means that increased financial aid will have to be provided by the government and families involved towards social and medical care.
     While it is good news that life expectancy is rising, there is a growing financial burden being placed upon the shoulders of a decreasing workforce, the government and families.

     从上图可以看出，2000年至2050年，中国60岁及以上的老年人口增长显著。据联合国统计，2000年60岁及以上的老年人口为1.2亿，约占总人口的10％；到2050年，60岁及以上的老年人口将达到4.5亿，约占总人口的32％。
     与日俱增的逐渐老龄化的人口给任何社会都将带来严重的后果。首先，这意味着劳动力日渐减少。其次，这意味着日渐减少的劳动力不得不供养越来越多的老年人。第三，这意味着政府和相关家庭将不得不把更多的财政补贴投向社会关怀和医疗保健。
     虽然人的预期寿命在增加是个好消息，但是日渐减少的劳动力以及政府和家庭肩上的财政负担会越来越重。
