III. 定语从句应注意的问题补充

1. 有时候一个先行词由两个定语从句限制，这叫双重限制或多层修饰。

Is there anything else you'd like that you don't see on the shelves?

有别的任何你想要的却在架子上你看不到的东西吗？

There was one thing he told me which I don't believe .

有一件他告诉我但我不相信的事情。

2. 为了加强语气，有时先行词可用不同的词语或代词重复，形成一个同位语结构。

People wore their summer clothes, the clothes they had gone to work in .

人们穿着夏装，穿着他们上班去时穿的衣服。

Beijing is the capital of China, a city we all want to visit again and again .

北京是中国的首都，一个我们都想再三浏览的城市。

Jack is a good student, one we all should learn from .

杰克是个好学生，一个我们都应该向其学习的学生。

3. 一个先行词其后跟有两个并列的定语从句时，第二个从句须重复相应的关系代词。

This practice book is intended for foreign engineers who have already mastered the elements of English, and who now want to use their knowledge of the language to read books on their own subjects.

这本实用手册是为那些已经掌握了英语基础以及现在想用这种知识来读自己专业书的外国工程师准备的。

4. 引导并列定语从句的关系代词在定语从句中作宾语时，第一个从句的关系代词可以省略，但是引导第二个从句的关系代词不能省略。

The house (which) he bought in 1968, and which he sold two years later, is again on the market.

他1968年买进，两年后又卖出的那座房子现在又在售了。

5. 如果并列定语从句是由不同的关系代词引导，第二个定语从句的关系代词通常总是用wh-词。

She bought many houses that were not only better than what I had bought, but which were cheaper.

她买了很多房子，不仅比我买的好，也比我买的便宜。

6. “介词+which”可以引导非限制性不定式定语从句。

I had nothing on which to focus .

I had nothing on which I can focus.

=I had nothing to focus on .

我没有任何可专注的事情。
